NOISE
Noise (San Diego New Music) will be performing their first concert of the new year at the La Jolla Athenaeum. The classic graphic-score composition December, 1952 by Earle Brown sets the stage for three open form works from the late 1970’s, Michael Nyman’s Bell Set No. 1, a minimalist take on church bell change-ringing, John Cage’s Inlets for amplified conch shells, and Stuart Saunders Smith’s deconstructed pop song Notebook. Two works by celebrated composer and Bang On A Can clarinetist Evan Ziporyn bring a cross-cultural perspective to the evocation of the natural world through music: Fragrant Forest from the Balinese-inspired Pondok suite for solo piano, and the brand-new virtuoso flute solo Speak At-man! meant to evoke the Hindu universal consciousness ‘atman’. Rounding out the program is Charles Amirkhanian’s raucous text-sound composition Church Car and Alvin Lucier’s meditative Silver Streetcar for the Orchestra for solo percussion.
